recently visited this place and it was absolutely fantastic! The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, perfect for a great evening out. Their wine selection was wonderful and really complemented the delicious food. The focaccia was a standout, especially paired with the squash blossom. The flavors just melted together perfectly. The short ribs were to die for - so tender and flavorful, they were a real treat. The service was friendly and attentive, and the food was simply delicious. Highly recommend checking this place out!
we didn't have reservation but arrived pretty late on a weekday so we got seated promptly. the foccacia was not to be missed.
I had an amazing meal last night at Chi Spacca, with a perfect server and delicious dishes that I overly indulged in. The absolute must get item is the Foccia di Recco. It may seem steep at $34 but it may also change your life. It's that good. Simple and delicious. I would also highly recommend the Scotch Egg. It's not always on the menu, but if you see this $18 delicacy, it's well worth ordering. It has a very light breading on this, meat focused forward and some of the most nicely seasoned meat I've ever had in a scotch egg. Perfection. We also had the Roasted Squash Blossoms ($18) which my ignorant mind thought would be deep fried. No, I legit ate flowers stuffed with ricotta in a tomato viniagrette last night. The mushrooms are super cool and diverse in types but I may skip this next time at $22. So many tasty things, and neither of the aforementioned items excited me. We also had the Beef & Bone Marrow Pie which amazed people when it was delivered to the table. Accompanied by rich and creamy mashed potatoes stirred heavily with a generous dollops of butter, this beef cheek pie was stellar. $65 and huge pieces of marrow inside that bone. Great presentation! I'm a big Nancy Silverton fan, everything she creates is amazing. You're in for a treat of a meal at Chi Spacca. I just have to try her pizza spot now to try the Melrose & Highland Silverton trifecta!
You must go have dinner at Chi Spacca! I can't think of anything more enjoyable! From the moment you enter the restaurant and are greeted with a warm welcome and then look around...beautifully decorated with wine bottles all along an entire wall and then there's the kitchen that is there for your enjoyment..I can't say enough about the service.. Matt was our waiter.. He was not only exceptional but entertaining. I almost forgot to mention the Pork Chop. If that's your thing.. you'll never taste one any better.. anywhere.. I promise!!!
Highly recommended to come on a Monday or Tuesday for their smash burger! It's soooo good and they only serve them on counter seats.
Honestly have no idea how I had never heard about Nancy Silverton's chi SPACCA until recently. I guess I was always more focused on her more famous next door neighbor, Osteria Mozza. Finally had the chance to come here recently and boy it was worth it! So chi SPACCA is focused on the meats rather than pasta, so you won't find any pasta on the menu at all here. I can safely say everything here hit the spot! A quick rundown: 1. Veal Tongue: Better than I expected! Very soft and quite tasty. Essentially was like carpaccio. 2. Preserved Octopus Pomodoro: Wasn't quite would I expect, but at least the octopus was cooked well. 3. Spacca Caesar: Very fresh salad. Bonus points for the anchovies! 4. Porchetta Fredda: Also another item that surprised me. Porchetta was soft and the lemon and salsa on top provided great flavor here. 5. Rock Cod: This is actually not on the menu at all, but they offered it to us as a test item. Consider the test passed with flying colors! It was deboned layered with a bunch of roasted garlic and lemon butter. Needs to be on the regular menu. 6. Bistecca Fiorentina: Had to get the 50 oz dry-aged, bone-in porterhouse. Much bigger than the pictures would make it seem. Some pieces were cooked a little more than medium rare, but overall very tasty. 7. Tomahawk Pork Chop: I'm not really a pork chop guy, but this was actually better than the porterhouse! Cooked absolutely perfectly. Plus they gave us the bones, which had a sizeable amount of meat for us to carve off. 8. Beef & Bone Marrow Pie: Almost didn't get this because this was $65, but very glad we did. This was the best surprise of them all! Basically, this is an elevated pot pie but oh man it was insanely tasty. Would order this again in a heartbeat. 9. Apricot Jam Tart: Really tasty, and the gelato was a great compliment. 10. Basque Cheesecake: This was very very good. About as good as it gets for Basque cheesecake. Would demolish this on my own without hesitation. 11. Stracciatella: Bonus dessert that they gave us for free! Came with a waffle cookie on top. Service here was absolutely fantastic. Our server guided us through the menu, and convinced us to get certain items like the beef and bone marrow pie which we have no regrets ordering. And yeah, they gave us the free dessert. Can't complain at all! Ambience is actually very cozy. The restaurant was actually a lot smaller than I was expecting. Since I had been to Osteria Mozza two months before this trip, I was expecting something like that. Nope, it was actually a very casual and relaxed restaurant. We got the one big table in the middle since there were eight of us. Aside from that, all other tables fit only two people. I imagine they just push tables together for parties of more than two. Parking here is difficult of course. I prefer to go to Mozzaplex on Sundays because the parking is way easier on Sundays since there are less restrictions on parking on Highland. Other than that, it may be a challenge. Overall, I would definitely recommend chi SPACCA to anyone. Completely different menu and vibe compared to Osteria Mozza, but it stands on its own.
What a excellent meal! Everything was fabulous. Started out with olives and cheese and the focaccia and burrata. Main course was the porterhouse and the sausage, we had sides of mashed potato's and mushrooms. Wire to wire great meal wines on photo below
Another fantastic night in the books at Chi Spacca. I wasn't planning to update my previous review, but this meal stood out in such sharp relief service-wise (versus the disappointment of Osteria Mozza) that I had to pay my compliments to the staff. The food was exemplary as ever, but there was an extended lull between appetizers and mains, which our server salvaged by offering us a surprise middle course (the Mare Al Cartoccio) - delightful seafood en papillote. They also waived corkage on one of our bottles by way of apology for a delay that didn't bother us in the slightest. There was never a false note to the meal, nor did we feel rushed in any way during a busy Saturday service. On the way out we mentioned that we were planning on going to Osteria M that same weekend, and we were gently warned that we wouldn't enjoy the experience as much as we had enjoyed CS. Prophetic!
Dad's birthday dinner and have dined at both Osteria Mozza and Pizzeria Mozza multiple times each. We love the food everytime and were expecting nothing less. The ambiance is your typical dark, elegant, and quaint Italian dining experience with the twist of cured meats being displayed. They also have a little market of ingredients they use on your right when you walk in. Server, was great and when food slowed he was very attentive to check in constantly throughout the night. What we ordered (aka the best part): Puglia Burrata x3- we get this at osteria mozza everytime and ask for extra oil and salt on the side so we drench both bread and cheese. So much better than the focaccia as the bread is crispy, yet pillowy in the center, and slight hint of garlic that they rub on the bread. Veal Tongue- surprisingly tender and salsa on top added nice acidity Octopus- Perfectly charred, the beans and sauce added beautiful acid and was addicting that I kept eating all the beans on the bottom. Beef and Bone Marrow Pie- MUST GET! This is a very rich dish especially with the creamy mashed potatoes on the side, but it is so worth it. I didn't know Italians could make one of the best pie crusts I have ever had. Pepper Steak- it was tender, but just nothing compared to the pie Branzino- comes with a lot of bones and very fishy, sent it back immediately Onion Rings- BEST EVER! Each onion ring was picture perfect golden brown and heavily coated in batter which is the best part. You also get an addicting lemon aioli to dip this masterpiece. Broccolini- Perfectly acidic and also slightly spicy, helped to balance out all the richness The desserts were all horrible: Whole Apple Pie, Olive Oil Chocolate, and cheesecake ALL BAD! Except the banana ice cream which we got as a compliment from the server. Overall, must get octopus, puglia burrata, beef and bone marrow pie, and onion rings. Skip dessert and be sure to get something from the market like the hat which is what I got :)
Not to lie, despite all these mixed reviews, I personally enjoyed my dining experience here at Chi Spacca. I liked every dish we ordered, and I would definitely come again for it. Not to mention, our server was so professional and friendly. She was so attentive and accommodating throughout the whole night. I did not catch her name, though. So my boyfriend and I ordered Affetati Misti, Heirloom Tomato, Foccacia di Recco, Bistecca Fiorentina, and three different reds. We also got a Roasted Pear for dessert. It was hard for me to choose just one favorite, but obviously the steak was juicy cooked to medium rare, just how I like it. It was tender and soft, and every bite was heavenly. The acidity of the Heirloom Tomato was on point. It complemented really well with all the other dishes and even with the wine. They are pretty known for their foccacia, and yes, it sure is different. It was almost like a thin-crust pizza, but the melty stracchino and generous amount of olive oil were definitely flavorful. We were both really full after eating, but when our server asked if we wanted any dessert, we could not decline when we heard Roasted Pear, and so we got it. I am so glad we had this. It was so delicious. Soft and sweet roasted pear with vanilla ice cream and crispy texture was a perfect trio. I absolutely recommend getting this at the end of your meal! The cozy and casual vibe is inviting, and you get to see the open kitchen, especially when you're seated at the bar like I did. Seeing the guy grilling those thick steaks on an open flame right in front of me was indeed entertaining. Though your check might not be too friendly, I think the price for the 50-ounce steak is very reasonable. For those who love meat, this is the place to visit!
